Neil Chatani's Family Room

Summary:

This Acoustone Speaker Cloth installation shows how much you can accomplish with a little craftiness and the highest quality acoustically transparent fabric on the market. For Neil Chatani’s Family Room, this was the perfect fix.

Application Introduction:

Like a lot of new construction these days, this home came with built-in cabinets in the family room and space for a TV. The homeowner mounted the center-channel speaker above the TV enclosure and cut away the bookshelves to make room for the left and right speakers, while preserving an opening just large enough for a 42-inch screen.

Treatment Provided:

Custom speaker grills are an easy way to hide otherwise lackluster carpentry. The frames were precisely fabricated by cutting both ends of pre-measured square dowels at 45-degree angles using a miter box and joining the pieces with wood glue and finishing nails. To complete the grilles, the homeowner stretched Acoustone Speaker Cloth around each frame like a canvas and attached them to the back using a household stapler. Acoustone Speaker Cloth is a sound-transparent grille cloth, and in this application was used in a color to match the adjacent fireplace. Ball-and-socket-style clips hold the speaker grilles to the shelves behind and above.

Results:

“This versatile yet modest system has subtly transformed our house, filling it with music from two zones and sending the sofa courtside at Staples Center when the Lakers are on TNT. We couldn’t be happier with the results” – Neil Chatani, homeowner
