Automatic Door Bottom DORBOT369A1218

Our Automatic Door Bottom utilizes a flat spring mechanism, which activates when closing the door, lowering a neoprene seal insert against the floor or threshold to create a sound seal. These are for use on the push side of the door. The frame compresses a protruding hinge-side "plunger" as the door closes to activate the spring. The Automatic Door Bottom then drops a seal in a scissor-like motion from the hinge side, adjusting to the floor from a pivoting point. As the neoprene seal compresses, it forms a tight, secure seal against the saddle or floor. The sweep retracts automatically as the door opens.

Our Automatic Door Bottoms can be made to fit any sized door up to 48." We offer a surface-mounted unit, as well as a mortised and semi-mortised version. Surface-mounted bottoms install without removing the door from its hinges. Semi-mortised bottoms may require door removal if the door does not have a cut out. Mortised bottoms will require removal of the door prior to installation. These door bottoms are available with a clear anodized aluminum or dark bronze anodized aluminum finish.

Automatic door bottoms are often used in conjunction with door jamb seals and acoustic thresholds or as an Acoustic Door Seal Kit.

Applications of Automatic Door Bottoms

Automatic door bottoms provide an effective solution for sealing gaps under doors, making them ideal for a variety of applications, including:

  • Residential Spaces: Enhance energy efficiency by preventing drafts, blocking noise, and maintaining a comfortable indoor environment.
  • Commercial Offices: Reduce noise transmission between offices and meeting rooms, improving privacy and productivity.
  • Hotels and Hospitality: Increase guest comfort by blocking sound, air, and light leaks between rooms.
  • Healthcare Facilities: Ensure better hygiene and reduce noise levels in hospitals and clinics.
  • Recording Studios and Theaters: Maintain acoustic integrity by preventing sound leakage in sound-sensitive spaces.

No matter the environment, an automatic door bottom ensures effective sealing and soundproofing.

5 Benefits of Automatic Door Bottoms

Automatic door bottoms offer a range of practical and acoustic benefits, including:

1. Noise Reduction

Seal air gaps to block sound transmission and improve door assembly STC ratings.

2. Energy Efficiency

Prevents drafts and air leakage, reducing energy costs for heating and cooling.

3. Flexible Installation

Available in surface-mounted, semi-mortised, and fully mortised designs for various door types.

4. Durable Construction

Constructed from anodized aluminum with a solid neoprene rubber seal for long-lasting performance.

5. Smooth Operation

Automatically retracts when the door opens, ensuring smooth functionality.

These features make automatic door bottoms an essential addition to soundproofing and energy-efficient door systems.

How Automatic Door Bottoms Work

Automatic door bottoms are designed with an innovative mechanism that creates an effective and reliable seal. When the door closes, a flat spring mechanism activates, lowering the neoprene seal against the floor or threshold.

This action occurs in a scissor-like motion, with the seal pivoting to adjust seamlessly to uneven surfaces, ensuring a tight and consistent fit. As the door opens, the seal automatically retracts, allowing for unobstructed movement without any manual adjustment. The neoprene seal itself conforms to the surface, acting as a barrier that effectively blocks noise, drafts, and light leakage.

This functionality makes automatic door bottoms an essential component for maintaining acoustic integrity and energy efficiency in any setting.

Environmental and Energy Efficiency Benefits

Automatic door bottoms contribute to sustainability and energy efficiency by:

  • Reducing Energy Costs: Sealing air gaps under doors minimizes heating and cooling loss, improving insulation.
  • Improving Air Quality: Prevents drafts and outdoor contaminants from entering indoor spaces.
  • Eco-Friendly Construction: Made from durable materials that require minimal maintenance and replacement, reducing waste.

For eco-conscious builders and homeowners, automatic door bottoms offer both performance and environmental benefits.

Installation Guide and Tips

Installing automatic door bottoms is simple and straightforward. Follow these steps for the best results:

1. Prepare the Door

Begin by thoroughly cleaning the bottom edge of the door to remove any dust, debris, or uneven materials. This ensures the automatic door bottom adheres properly and functions smoothly.

2. Measure and Cut

Measure the width of your door carefully and compare it to the length of the automatic door bottom. Be precise with your measurements to ensure the seal extends fully across the door’s bottom without gaps on either side.

3. Attach the Unit

The method of attachment depends on the type of automatic door bottom you’re installing:

Surface-Mounted Models

Align the unit with the bottom edge of the door and attach it directly using screws provided with the kit. Ensure the mechanism is level and centered for optimal operation. This method is quick and does not require removing the door.

Semi-Mortised Models

If the door has a pre-cut notch, align the unit within the notch and secure it with screws. If the notch is not already present, use a router or similar tool to create one. Some semi-mortised installations may require removing the door for easier access.

Mortised Models

For a fully concealed look, mortised units are installed into a hidden notch at the bottom of the door. This method requires removing the door, using a router or saw to create the notch, and then securing the unit inside. Ensure proper alignment to maintain smooth operation.

4. Test the Mechanism

After attaching the unit, open and close the door several times to ensure the automatic door bottom functions properly. When the door closes, the neoprene seal should drop to form a tight seal against the floor or threshold. When the door opens, the seal should retract completely.

5. Adjust if Needed

If the seal does not fully contact the floor or threshold, adjust the drop settings on the unit. Many models allow you to fine-tune the drop height to accommodate uneven floors or thresholds.

For uneven surfaces or challenging installations, consult the product's installation guide for additional tips and troubleshooting. Properly installed, your automatic door bottom will provide years of reliable performance, improving energy efficiency, noise reduction, and comfort in your space.
