5 Tips for Soundproofing a Home Office

Tip #1: Wall Soundproofing

Walls are typically the main concern when it comes to soundproofing because they account for the most square footage of space. Also, because they are what separates the home office from adjacent rooms, as well as to the outside, they are the primary vector for sound to enter.

How to soundproof your home office walls depends on how much noise you have to block. If it is a significant amount of noise, then you may want to go all the way by reinforcing the soundproofing capabilities of the drywall by adding AudioSeal® Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) Soundproofing Barrier along with Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound.

This method involves removing the drywall to add the MLV barrier, so not the most convenient, but it is well worth the time and energy spent—especially if you are looking to redo/repaint your walls anyway. For the most troublesome of sounds, you can further enhance this soundproofing assembly by adding Resilient Sound Isolation Clips (RSIC-1) to create an air gap and further decouple the wall, providing maximum soundproofing.

If this seems like too much, or if only one or two walls are leaking noise, then mounting AlphaSorb® Barrier Acoustic Panels onto the walls is a great option that will impart significant soundproofing.

Tip #2: Door Soundproofing

Doors are too often the way sound enters your home office because they are openings in the wall. Theoretically, they should act as a sealed wall when closed, but this is rarely the case. Especially with interior doors, openings abound and even the doors themselves can be somewhat acoustically transparent, as is the case with hollow-core doors.

The solution is to make sure your home office door is properly sealed. If you know you have a nice, solid core door, and only a bit of sound is entering, then applying a PrivacyShield® Soundproofing Door Seal Kit might be all that you need. If too much sound is entering from the door and you know the door is hollow-core, then replacing the door is your best bet, such as with a PrivacyShield® Soundproof Door.

Tip #3: Window Soundproofing

Similar to doors although usually more sealed, windows are an easy way for sound to enter. Considering, too, that windows connect the home office to the outside world, the noises coming from outside are usually stronger – lawn equipment, traffic, wildlife, weather, etc. Glass isn’t a great soundproofing material, but the addition of a PrivacyShield® Window Seal Kit provides an additional transparent layer to block noise.

Tip #4: Floor Soundproofing

Floor soundproofing is especially important in home offices located on the second or third story, where inherent floor assemblies aren’t nearly as soundproof as their main floor counterparts that sit on the foundation. Similar to wall soundproofing, the addition of Iso-Step® Soundproofing Underlayment is a great way to not only soundproof noise coming from footfalls/impacts in the home office itself, but from any noise coming from lower floors.

For serious noise, adding a nice rug on top of the Iso-Step underlayment floor assembly will keep noise at bay, the home office peaceful, and add a nice aesthetic touch!

Top #5: Sound Control for Optimal Acoustics

Soundproofing will certainly take care of unwanted noise from creeping in, but we also should think about how to make the sounds we want in the home office sound better. Any problem reverb and/or echo coming from voices, speakers, and whirring computer equipment can negatively impact the acoustics of the room even though you’ve properly soundproofed it. Thankfully, soundproofing is the hard part, and adding sound control is the easy finishing touch.
