Acoustic ceiling tiles, abbreviated ACT (for acoustical ceiling tile), are sound-absorbing panels that drop into your existing drop ceiling grid, or mount onto a hard ceiling, to cut echo and reverberation. Acoustical treatment isn't just for walls: ceiling treatments are just as, and in some cases more, important for taming acoustical issues in a space, and they can augment both the quality of sound and the appearance of your facility.

Acoustic Ceiling Tiles are an easy and effective way to reduce the echo in a noisy room by using your existing drop ceiling grid. How Are Acoustic Ceiling Tiles Used?

Many offices, retail stores, and even some homes have a suspended dropped ceiling or T-Grid structure for their ceiling design. Acoustic Ceiling Tiles are placed into this structure to complete the ceiling. This design works well for many buildings as it allows for unsightly infrastructure like wiring, ductwork, or plumbing to be hidden above the drop ceiling structure. In addition, this plenum space between the tiles and the ceiling deck allows access for inspection or maintenance. Acoustical control was another objective of dropped ceilings. For instance, highly absorptive materials like fiberglass or foam could be used to reduce echo and reverberation within the space. Unfortunately, the quality of the standard tiles used for many buildings is poor. Upgrading to acoustical ceiling tiles will not only make the room you are in sound much better, but you can also reduce room-to-room sound transfer and make heating and cooling more efficient after installing our Acoustical Ceiling Tiles. These tiles can be made of various acoustical materials like fiberglass, foam, wood, polyester, and other substrates.

Why Are Acoustic Ceiling Tiles Important?

Sound Blocking

In some cases, you may wish to prevent sound from going through a ceiling grid system. Sound blocking acoustic ceiling tiles may be the answer.

Ceiling grid systems in most buildings will only have partition walls that stop where they meet the grid. If the walls do not meet the roof, sound can easily flank through the grid into the next space. You might also want to prevent mechanical noise from seeping into your office. Sound Diffusion

Sound diffusing acoustic ceiling tiles will scatter and disperse sound that strikes the surface. The shape of a typical sound diffuser is not flat. This redirects the sound in a different direction, reducing the sound's intensity without removing the sound like an absorber material would. This helps to improve sound clarity and is particularly useful in critical listening environments. The AlphaDiffuser™ is available in three different patterns to suit your style. The concave and convex patterns are available in a fabric-faced version with the AlphaDiffuser™. NRC and CAC: The Two Ratings That Matter for Ceilings

Two ratings tell you almost everything about how a ceiling tile will perform.

NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) measures absorption, or how much sound the tile pulls out of the room. Higher is better, and quality tiles run from about 0.70 up past 1.0. NRC is what controls echo inside the space.

CAC (Ceiling Attenuation Class) measures blocking, or how well the tile stops sound from traveling up over a wall, through the shared plenum, and down into the next room. CAC matters when you need speech privacy between spaces, and 35 or higher is considered good.

The two ratings trade off against each other: an open, absorptive tile scores high on NRC but low on CAC. When you need both quiet and privacy, pair a high-NRC tile with a dedicated plenum barrier above the grid.

Frequently Asked Questions About Acoustic Ceiling Tiles

ACT stands for acoustical ceiling tile (also called acoustic ceiling tile). It refers to sound-absorbing panels that install into or onto a ceiling to reduce echo and reverberation.
Most are made of fiberglass or mineral fiber. Others use PVC or plastic, wood fiber, perforated metal over a backer, or lightweight foam and polyester (PET). Fiberglass delivers the highest absorption.
Some do, but blocking is a different job from absorption. NRC measures how much echo a tile absorbs inside the room, while CAC measures how well it stops sound from reaching the next room over the wall. For room-to-room privacy, look at CAC or add a plenum barrier.
For echo control, look for an NRC of 0.70 or higher. Premium tiles reach 0.85 to past 1.0. The higher the number, the more sound the tile absorbs.
Some tiles are made to be painted with a special non-bridging acoustic paint that keeps the pores open. Ordinary paint seals those pores and destroys the tile's absorption, so use a paintable tile and the correct coating.
Quality tiles carry a Class A (Class 1) fire rating tested to ASTM E84. Building codes generally require it, so confirm the rating on the spec sheet before you buy.
Standard lay-in sizes are 2x2 and 2x4 feet, dropping into either a 15/16-inch or 9/16-inch grid. Surface-mount and custom sizes are available too.
