What Does Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) Do?

Mass loaded vinyl (MLV) helps create sound-blocking assemblies to reduce airborne sound transmission for new or retrofit applications. These barriers are as heavy as lead but use no lead fillers. Dense, yet flexible, mass loaded vinyl improves sound transmission loss (STC) without losing valuable space. Use this product in both new or retrofit soundproofing construction. The standard offering is a non-reinforced barrier for use in average construction. Other configurations include materials for pipes and ducting, a transparent version and a heavy-duty version.>/p?

Mass loaded vinyl also appears as a layer in other products that we use to block sound. Often our customers combine these options with other materials in order to provide a complete sound-blocking solution.

Walls, Ceilings, and Floors

AudioSeal® Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) Soundproofing Barrier is the industry standard when it comes to mass loaded vinyl sound barriers. It helps reduce the amount of airborne sound transmitted through walls, floors, and ceilings. Depending on the site conditions, you can easily add mass to a multitude of construction assemblies. Typically used for soundproofing a wall in new construction, it can be stapled to the studs prior to hanging drywall. To retrofit to an existing wall, simply glue the barrier to the surface with a vinyl construction adhesive. Adding some large head roofing nails at the top will keep the barrier from sliding while the adhesive sets. Next, add another layer of drywall or other finish. Audioseal® Sound Barrier is flexible and tear-resistant, yet it can easily be cut with a utility knife.

HVAC and Pipes

Sound also tends to transmit through pipes or ductwork. We have a couple of materials that can help combat this type of noise. AudioSeal® Duct and Pipe Lag is a mass loaded vinyl sound barrier with a scrim foil face. Use pipe lag if your pipes or ducting have a decoupling fiberglass wrap. The reinforced, aluminum foil jacket provides a surface to accept matching lag tape.

If you are looking for a product to reduce noise from pipes or HVAC duct work, AudioSeal® Duct and Pipe Wrap is perfect for you. This composite material consists of a foil-faced mass loaded vinyl, bonded to a layer of quilted acoustical fiberglass. Use AudioSeal® Duct and Pipe Wrap to wrap ductwork and pipes to absorb sound, preventing it from entering or leaving. The foil-faced exterior serves as a protective jacket for both indoor and outdoor applications. Also, this provides an ideal surface to apply lag tape, making installation simple.

Tear Resistant

AudioSeal® Reinforced Sound Barrier is a high-strength mass loaded vinyl that can be used when a durable, tear-resistant material is required for soundproofing. A high-strength polyester fabric backer makes this product versatile and heavy-duty. The improved durability prevents tearing when suspended vertically, like a curtain.  Because it can support its own weight, use it to create hanging barrier partitions. Additionally, AudioSeal® Reinforced Sound Barrier is resistant to shrinking, rotting, adverse environmental conditions, and UV light.

Transparent

AudioSeal® Clear Sound Barrier is a transparent mass loaded vinyl barrier that offers significant noise reduction while allowing for visibility and easy access. For interior applications, use this to seal and block the transmission of sound from one area to another. This is the perfect option for situations that require see-through material. AudioSeal® Clear Sound Barrier may also be fashioned to cover or create vision lite panels for certain applications. Custom configurations include sewn Velcro® into the edges to create a clear vinyl panel for easy removal. Also, use this clear vinyl panel curtain around loud machinery while still allowing for a range of vision.

Mass Loaded Barrier Composites

Since mass loaded vinyl is dense and thin, we incorporate in with other materials for improved performance. Our composite foam is an excellent choice for creating an enclosure or lining the walls of a machine room. If you need temporary hanging barrier partitions for interior applications, the PrivacyShield® Dual-Sided Absorptive Soundproofing Blanket and PrivacyShield® Absorptive Soundproofing Blanket may be used. For exterior barrier applications, use the PrivacyShield® Outdoor Absorptive Soundproofing Blanket. Mass loaded vinyl, layered between layers of fiberglass, allows you to wrap the room floor to ceiling to block sound with our Alphasorb® Fabric Wrapped Barrier Acoustic Panels. Similar to the AudioSeal® Duct and Pipe Wrap, the PrivacyShield® Ceiling Tile Barrier is available in standard sized to fit into existing T-bar suspended grid systems. These sound-blocking ceiling tiles simply install over your existing tiles to prevent sound from passing through the grid system to maintain speech privacy.
